October is a month that holds significant importance for millions of people worldwide. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we unite to shed light on breast cancer, celebrate the brave survivors, and honor the relentless fighters in this ongoing battle. In this article, we delve into the critical aspects of breast cancer awareness, the latest technological advancements in breast cancer care, and the importance of early detection. According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, approximately 297,790 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. making it the most common cancer in American women.

Our VP of Clinical Excellence, Linda Robinson, MSN, RN, CPXP had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Alexa Elder on our podcast PX Space. She is a specialist in breast surgical oncology and the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Elder practices at the Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center at Ochsner in New Orleans, LA, and is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

Dr. Elder highlighted the significance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing the incredible strength and resilience of breast cancer patients. She stressed the importance of understanding one’s individual tumor characteristics and their impact on treatment options and outcomes, encouraging patients to focus on the unique aspects of their cancer rather than fixating on the stage.

The Importance of Early Detection

The American Cancer Society emphasizes the importance of early breast cancer detection. Often, breast cancer is asymptomatic in its initial stages, making regular screening critical. Mammograms are a key tool in this regard, with national guidelines suggesting that women begin regular mammograms at the age of 40. However, individuals with specific risk factors, such as a family history of breast cancer, may need earlier or more frequent screenings. Genetic testing is also becoming more accessible, allowing individuals to assess their risk factors with greater ease.

Additionally, while breast cancer affects women, men are not immune to this disease.  Therefore, men should remain vigilant about any breast changes and seek medical attention if they notice any abnormalities.

Emerging Technologies in Breast Cancer Care

Dr. Elder also discussed emerging technologies in the field of breast cancer care. She mentioned advancements in breast cancer surgery options, including technologies for localizing breast cancers using markers that emit radiation or radio waves. These technologies aid surgeons in accurately identifying and removing cancerous tissue while preserving healthy tissue. Additionally, there are innovations in identifying lymph nodes and cancer margins, making breast cancer surgery more precise and effective. In addition to localized tumor identification, innovations in identifying lymph nodes and cancer margins are making breast cancer surgery more precise and effective. This means that surgeons can confidently navigate the surgical procedure, reducing the likelihood of complications and improving overall patient outcomes.
